Global Green Cuts the (Green) Ribbon on Eco-Friendly School

Global Green, Hollywood's favorite environmental non-profit, is showing they have the substance to back the style: last week, they launched their pilot program to create five green schools serving low income children in the Los Angeles area. Along with Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC), Global Green unveiled two of the finished projects with a ribbon cutting ceremony. Of course, the ribbon was green. On October 17th the ribbon was cut for Animo Ralphe Bunche and Animo Justice schools in Los Angeles. These schools are in lower-income areas of LA, allowing the students to experience not only a better work environment more conducive to learning, but to be exposed to the possibilities that a greener, more sustainable approach to construction and building hold.
Global Green provided, in conjunction with the Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC), a $75,000 grant to cover some of the increased costs of making the school green.
Global Green provided via their grant:
-Free technical assistance that included, two goal-setting design charrettes, specialized daylighting and acoustic analysis, material specifications in the areas of low-emitting finishes and water savings fixtures, and issues of design team/contractor interface.
- Assisted the operations team in preparing management regimes for Low-Impact Maintenance, Green Cleaning and occupant comfort data collection surveys.
- Assisted the development team in the preparation of LEED documentation — the school is pursuing a LEED rating at the Certified level.
This initiative is part of Global Green's overall dedication to Green Schools - the organization is currently helping to rebuild several in New Orleans with similar grants. The goal of this initiative is to create healthier classrooms and more energy efficient schools that in turn improve student performance and save money for school districts, while helping to protect the environment and reducing carbon emissions. It's learning through experience, not just textbooks.
